Heston Blumenthal's exotic food to be sold at Waitrose

6 Jul 2010

Celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, famous for his bizarre culinary creations including bacon and egg ice cream, snail porridge and vanilla mayonnaise, will soon have a range of packaged food available at Waitrose. Shoppers will be able to sample the likes of 'mirin and konbu', 'Ponzu dressing', 'coriander and rose salt' and 'Scottish salmon smoked with Lapsong Souchong tea' in the supermarket chain's most expensive line of packaged food.

Some food experts have warned of the risk to Blumenthal's outstanding reputation, but he is reportedly confident of the range's success. And he is not the first celebrity chef to put his name to a supermarket line of food - Jamie Oliver, Lloyd Grossman and Antony Worrall Thompson also have their own brands.

Blumenthal, who is set to appear alongside Delia Smith in a series of Waitrose advertisements, said "I have been working on the creation of these dishes with Waitrose for some time", and Waitrose's marketing director Rupert Thomas sees the new brand as "a natural progression of (their) relationship" that consumers will enjoy.
