Essex chef to revive America's oldest inn

2 Jul 2010

An Essex celebrity chef (but not the one you're thinking of) is hoping to bring the 300-year old Robert Morris Inn in Oxford, Maryland, back to life. Mark Salter, who is as famous in the United States as Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver, trained at Colchester Institute in Essex from 1979 to 1981, earning a diploma in professional cookery and the title of best student, and has since spent nearly 20 years in America, where he has cooked for the likes of Michael Jackson and Owen Wilson.

Working alongside Scottish hotelier and entrepreneur Ian Fleming, Salter, who is currently the executive chef at the Inn at Perry Cabin in Maryland, hopes to revive 'the oldest working inn in America', which consists of a 16-bedroom hotel and 300-cover dining room and tavern, to its former glory.
