College Struggles to Fill Chef Places

14th Feb 20111

Adele Dawson, head of skills at South Devon College, cited the image of tourism as a factor in explaining the lack of interest in chef training courses in her region. At a recent regional regeneration event she stated that tourism was still seen as an unattractive career with "long hours, part time, seasonal and low pay." She added: "To put it into context, we struggle to fill our professional apprenticeship chef course: we've hundreds of people cooking at establishments across Torbay but only 15 trying to raise their skills level. The higher the quality of our tourism offer, the higher the calibre of applicants we will attract."
