Media debate on chef salaries

29 Dec 2017

The recent publicity around the advertisement for a Demi Chef de Partie to work for the Royal Household at Buckingham Palace sparked an interesting international debate on chef salaries.

The salary was advertised on the Royal Household website at £20,604 per annum with a package that included a pension contribution, 33 days paid holiday and an option to live on-site.

The Sun said "The Queen is on the hunt for a new chef but the starting salary might prove hard to swallow", while the "Business Insider" website compared the salary with other catering roles in the USA:

"That's about $5,000 more than the average salary of a line cook at a restaurant in the US - or $8,300 more than a fast food worker at McDonald's".

The Fresh Toast website described the salary as "royally disappointing" and the Town & Country website said the salary was "surprisingly low".

Current wage rates for a Demi Chef de Partie advertised on our Chefs Jobs site range from £16,000 to £21,000, so that appears to suggest that the royal salary was towards the upper end of the scale for this type of role.
